Center Fire: San Diego Crews Respond to Blaze in Rancho Bernardo
On Wednesday morning, fire crews rushed to the scene of a fire in San Diego's Rancho Bernardo neighborhood. The fire, dubbed the "Center Fire" or "Bernardo Fire," prompted evacuation orders and warnings in the surrounding areas for several hours, but all orders and warnings were lifted by 3:15 p.m.
The fire, which threatened homes, was first reported around 8:55 a.m. in the area of Bernardo Center Drive and Camino Del Norte, near Interstate 15. The initial call was received by the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department (SDFD), and the first unit of firefighters arrived shortly after 9 a.m. By 11 a.m., the forward spread of the fire had been contained to four acres, and by 1:25 p.m., authorities confirmed that the fire had burned a total of seven acres.
Areas under evacuation orders included neighborhoods from Dove Canyon Road to the west, Camino Del Norte to the north, I-15 to the east, and Carmel Mountain Road to the south. Evacuation warnings extended as far south as Black Mountain Open Space Park, bordered by Camino Del Sur to the west and north, and Dove Canyon Road to the east.
A temporary evacuation center was established at 12080 Carmel Mountain Rd., the location of an At Home store and its parking lot. At least one person was transported to the hospital with burn injuries.
Road closures were in effect on Camino Del Norte and Interstate 15 at Camino Del Norte. Other affected roads included Bernardo Center and Camino Del Norte, Paseo Montanoso at Avenida De Los Lobos, and Camino Del Norte.
The San Diego Police Department, San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, and other emergency personnel continue to monitor the situation. This is a developing story, and updates will be provided as they become available.
